Senator Zubiri filed bill seeking to reimpose death penalty
The “Alabang Boys” controversy has caused a stir among lawmakers.
A bill was filed on Friday by Senator Majority Leader Miguel Zubiri seeking to reimpose the death penalty. However, Presidential Management Staff Cerge Remonde said the return of the death penalty will not solve the drug problem in the country. He likewise noted that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo remains firm on her stand, along with the Catholic Church, against the revival of the capital punishment.
Remonde stressed that the Chief Executive is not supporting the return of the death penalty as she even scrapped the law in 2006 before meeting Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City.
Senator Zubiri filed Senate Bill 2322 known as, “An act reimposing the death penalty on certain heinous crimes amending for the purpose certain sections of the Revised Penal Code as amended for other purposes.”
Both Senators Manuel Roxas and Francis Escudero opposed the return of the capital punishment.
Among those interested in having the death penalty law reimposed are some congressmen, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, Dangerous Drug Board Chairman Vicente Sotto III and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
